September was a month to remember for Malta International Airport, having handled a record 382,389 passengers, a rise of 2.4 per cent on the same period last year.

The increase was registered notwithstanding a 7.8 per cent drop in seats compared to a year before.

The past month also saw significant increases in the German and French markets when compared to September 2010. The German market grew by 22 per cent and the French by 3.1 per cent. The UK market registered a 3.1 per cent increase.

The Italian and Spanish markets, experienced a decline, with drops of 5.6 and one per cent respectively.

The airport handled 2,781,802 passengers, or 7.6 per cent more than last year.

MIA attributed much of the rise in passenger numbers to planes filling more seats. Between January and September, the seat load factor stood at 76.1 per cent, up 4.7 per cent on the same period in 2010.
