The latest measures of funding announced by the Ministry for Resources and Rural Affairs fall under the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development. EAFRD funds aim to ensure sustainable development initiatives in rural areas by helping to diversify activities and create new sources of income and employment while protecting the rural heritage. Subsidiaries will play an important role in environment and rural heritage conservation. Measures within this sector are financed by the European Agriculture Fund for Rural Development.

Such funds seek to develop competitiveness for farming and forestry, to protect the environment and the countryside, to improve the quality of life and diversification of the rural economy and to support locally based approaches to rural development.

The four measures that have been announced by the Ministry are measures 121, 133, 142, and 214. A total of €8 million have been allocated for these measures.

Measure 121, ‘Modernisation of Agricultural Holdings’, has a €4 million budget and aims at assisting farmers who want to improve their economic performance through the introduction of new technologies, innovation in production methods and development and diversification of local products. Furthermore, the concept of strengthening the natural environment and the conditions of cleanliness and maintenance of farm animals also fall under this measure. Due to the fact that demand for this measure is high, it is likely to be the last call for this measure.

Measure 133, ‘Information and promotion activities on food qualities schemes’ has been allocated a budget of €670,000. The principal objective of this scheme is to assist producer organisations to promote products that qualify under schemes of community or national quality. It seeks to stimulate consumer awareness of products in the local market and thus foster the demand for these products.

Measure 142, ‘Setting up of Producer Groups’ has been allocated a budget of €742,750. The aim of the measure is to develop market efficiency in the agricultural sector by encouraging and enabling the establishment of producer organisations.

For Measure 214, €2.5 million has been allocated. This measure is concerned with the aid for conservation of genetic resources in agriculture. The purpose of this aid is to preserve and possibly reverse the trend of erosion of genetic resources in agriculture including plant species and varieties and animal breeds. Aid for conservation of genetic resources in agriculture only applies to public bodies.

Applications for these measures close on December 2.
