The new single span breakwater bridge was put in place this afternoon in a delicate operation lasting several hours.

The first attempt, last Sunday, had to be aborted because of sea swell.

The 190-ton structure was lifted from the ship which brought it to Malta from Spain and placed in position across the 70-metre gap between Fort St Elmo and the breakwater arm.

The original two-span bridge was damaged in a brave but futile attempt by Italian Navy boats to enter Grand Harbour and attack a newly-arrived convoy during the second world war. The structure was then removed.
