Celtic’s disappointing start to the Premier League season received a further setback yesterday after captain Scott Brown was ruled out for 10 weeks with an ankle problem.

Celtic, who are third in the table and 10 points behind leaders Rangers, confirmed Brown is to undergo ankle surgery after sustaining the injury while on duty for Scotland in August.

Celtic said Brown faced a “minor procedure” on his right ankle, although the player has said the problem is not connected to ankle surgery he underwent twice in 2009.
