Germany practically made sure of their place in the next round of the 2012 European Championships after beating Malta 21-5 in a second round, first leg, match in Hamm last weekend.

The Germans were quick off the blocks and by the time that ends were changed they were already leading Sergio Afric’s team 15-3 (9-1, 6-2).

The Maltese kept the result to more respectable levels in the third and fourth quarters which went the hosts’ way 3-1 on both occasions.

The shock result of this round came in Kirishi, Russia where the hosts were beaten 13-6 by Spain.

The second legs are scheduled for October 15. The finals will be played in Eindhoven, next year.

Second round (first legs): Russia vs Spain 6-13; France vs Macedonia 8-6; Georgia vs Romania 5-11; Greece vs Slovakia 13-7; Germany vs Malta 21-5; Slovenia vs Turkey 5-7.
