Two men admit assaulting policemen
Two men were handed suspended sentences today after admitting to assaulting and violently resisting a police sergeant and a constable, slightly injuring them.
The incident happened on Sunday after feast celebrations had finished in Gudja.
The court heard how one of the accused, Clinton Borg, 27 of Birzebbuga was involved in a fight with other people. As the police intervened, Borg injured the policemen.
The other accused, Roderick Azzopardi, 32 of Gudja, who was not involved in the fight, tried to pull his friend from the fight and pushed the sergeant.
Magistrate Audrey Demicoli sentenced the two men to one year in jail suspended for a year.

Beating up policemen is quickly becoming a national hobby. This has to stop and since sentences are lenient officers must be armed and given full license to shoot and kill in self defence.

Inutli li noqodu nikkummentaw kemm hi ftit il prigunerija li nghatat fis sentenza mill Magistrat. Il Magistrat imxiet skond il ligi u xejn izjed..... jekk hemm xi haga hazina hija il ligi stess li qed nikwota hawn taht, il bzonn hu, kif ilu jghid il Ministru responsabli mill l-Intern li jihraxu il pieni.... imma meta?
Kap 9, Sec 96. tal Ligijiet ta Malta: Kull min jattakka jew jagħmel reżistenza bi vjolenza jew b’ħebb, ta’ xorta li ma titqiesx vjolenza pubblika, kontra persuna inkarigata skont il-liġi minn servizz pubbliku, fil-waqt li tkun
taġixxi għall-esekuzzjoni tal-liġi jew ta’ ordni mogħti skont il-liġi mill-awtorità kompetenti, jeħel, meta jinsab ħati -(a) jekk l-attakk jew ir-reżistenza jsiru minn wieħed jew tnejn min-nies, il-piena ta’ priġunerija minn erba’ xhursa sena; (b) jekk l-attakk jew ir-reżistenza jsiru minn tlieta min nies jew aktar, il-piena ta’ priġunerija minn seba’ xhur sa sentejn.

Here we go again belt a copper and get away with it -what's the world coming too as in my day this is almost a hanging offence and the perpetrators would have had the book thrown at them. What sort of message does this send out?

When are we going to stop haveing people assaulting Policeman at work and after, and why does some people does not think twice to assault a Policeman, the answer is very very easy, just check what happens after.

We pretend that our Policeman will always be protected by the law and the Courts, if not so , how can we be sure that they are going to protect us from assaults.

In my opinion, when someone refuse to obey a Police Officer's Order, it is a crime, and even more, when someone punch, hit, push, or injure a Police Officer in any rank, a real and meaningful and truthfully adequate Penalty is what most people will be justly pretending to hear, just like other Countries.

Sentences like this just lead to more lawlessness on the streets. The law is meant to be there as a deterrent, but this just gives the message that if you act violently, and the police turn up, just carry on as you were because you will just get a slap on the wrist.
The police are there to protect us. But they also need the courts to protect them. Whichever party introduces a policy of a mandatory minimum 4 year prison term for assaulting a police officer will win a lot of votes.

Are there any plans to factor in intoxication (of various substances) in cases of violence and road traffic accident or are we to continue to be happy, shrug and assume that boys will be boys! One is inclined to think that such incidents might be caused by more that just poor anger management skills considering that incidents seem to be more common after celebrations and visits to watering holes.
Considering that we continue to allow the highest alcohol level for driving in europe perhaps theories of cause and effect are in fact rubbish....who knows

These are the same policemen/policewomen that are there to protect and defend us and the apply the law. If the courts don't have respect for our police department how do you expect the citizens to behave. Shame on the courts. Veru Mickey Mouse courts.

Yes Mr Buhagiar, what happened to Gaia and other innocent defensely creatures, is extremely serious and well done for the judge yesterday to give such a sentence. The injury on the police officer was not life threatening and a police officer has the means and should have the know how to defend himself. Gaia couldn't.

So for killing a dog the accused gets a straight €20,000 fine...
....but for assaulting two policemen, a simple suspended sentence! That is, no punishment.
No wonder Malta is a dump as 1 in every 1000 criminal is truly punished! Shame.

In your own statement you are showing the difference between one case and another. One was killed and a dog feels just like a human being if not more and the other was assaulted, injured not killed! Gaia was defensely, police officers should have the necessary means and know how for self defence.
Mr Michael Buhagiar

Wise judgements from our courts:
dumping a dog in a skip is more serious than manhandling and injuring a police officer.
Keep it up courts. More of your learned judgements.
