Fgura council demands Enemalta compensation for 'black dust'
Fgura council has written to Enemalta asking for compensation after a report commissioned by Mepa found that the Marsa power station was the most likely source of the 'black dust' which plagued the locality over the past few years.
The council said such compensation could take the form of environment-projects in Fgura sponsored by the corporation.
Enemalta has disputed the findings of the report. compiled by Prof Alfred Vella.

It would be better if WSC also give compensation to the thousands in the North of the island who have been without water for 20 hours due to a fault in Cirkewwa.

I suggest that every Fgura resident and or any resident that lives close to these chimneys and or suspects of inhaling any of this black dust to go and have a chest X-Ray and if any of this black dust is found in their lungs, and is creating health problems, then get a copy of that X-Ray and proceed to a lawyer. Or even better start a class action suit against Enemalta for damages. The local councils should attend to such a suit in a court of law. This is the present and not 40 years ago as some like to argue. Somebody has to be held accountable.

Well done to a hard-working mayor. The Fgura council is not asking for a cash compensation, but for commendable environment-friendly initiatives that would benefit the Fgura community at large.
May other Cottonera area mayors follow suit.
Enemalta should contribute towards the well-being of long neglected second-class citizens.
Byron, the South needs people like you.

Ghaziz Victor Vella,
Le ma twelidtx taht Mintoff, izda taht Fenech Adami.
Naqbel mieghek meta ssemi l-pastazata tax-xoghol li ghaddej fuq il-Monument tas-Salib. Ghandek tkun taf li dak ix-xoghol qed isir mill-Ministeru tar-Rizorzi u mhux mill-Kunsill Lokali.

Being "the MOST LIKELY source" is not the same as "being THE source".
The council's presumption is premature.

Frankly I suggest that Fgura Council should be more concerned about resigning than about asking for "compensation". Why on earth have they played along with the Mepa-Enemalta-PM's office-parliamentary operetta for so long? The student work of year 2000 showed clearly that the Fgura area heavy dust falls were coming from Marsa; the "quiet years" that followed the tweaking of the precipitators came to an abrupt end when a somnolent Mepa woke up to Enemalta's transfer of fly (and bottom?) ash lacked necessary permits. The characteristic knee-jerk reaction of the (ir)responsible minister was to switch off the precipitators. The Fgura jeremiads started up again, accompanied this time by the ballads of the above mentioned cantastorie. Why wait till now, on the publication of a report which could not exactly damn Marsa very roundly as the "investigation" was not too credible. To cap it all Enemalta shot it down very smartly; government seems inclined to "accept" it, but only because it could point to the supposedly imminent closure of Marsa and as such is unlikely to consider "compensation" .

Ir-Residenti tal-Fgura ghandhom jitolbu kumpens BI DRITT u mhux b'karita. Taf kemm hi r-rata ta nies li jbatu bl-Asthma gewwa l-Fgura u l-lokalitajiet tal-madwar meta ikkumparata ma rhula ohra? Taf kemm hi r-rata ta' nies li mardu u li mietu bil-Cancer ikkomparata mar-rhula ohra? Il-Kumpens huwa Dritt u mhux gest ta' Karita. Bhal ma kumpanija privata li thammeg hija mitluba li thallas, daqstant iehor jekk l-Enemalta hamget ghandha toffri kumpens hi wkoll. Jekk ma taghmilx hekk b'mod voluntarju, il-Kunsill Lokali, kif ukoll ir-Residenti tal-Fgura ghandhom iffitxu lil Enemalta legalment gewwa l-Qrati Maltin u l-Qrati Ewropej.

thanks Michael.
you are mentioning 40 years ago - where standards where lower - not only in Malta but in the whole of Europe. Now it is 2011 and things should be different.
In teh UK - not very long ago the rivers where all polluted. So was the air in most European cities - but that was another time, mate. we should have come a long way by now - and if Enemalta didn't - they ought to pay for their lack of performance!!

@ A Dimech
Standards may have been lower 40 years ago but Mintoff lowered them further when he converted the oil-fired Marsa station to sulphur laden coal imported from Poland.
No Labour Environment Minister (did not even exist) or MP complained then. That was also the time when the Dockyard was in full swing producing its own black dust and grit and no one ever complained.
But now, that certain politically motivated smart alecks have become aware of the 'higher standards', they are raising hell. If Fgura receives one iota of compensation, then Marsa, Hamrun, the Cottonera region should also receive their fair share because they too put up with the inconvenience. Raising fuss about the black dust coming from the Marsa station is a non-starter since it will be closed in a matter of months unless the Opposition decides to throw even more wrenches in the works.
