Man to be charged over dog's death
A 58-year old man from Vittoriosa is expected to be charged today with causing the death of his pet dog, a female boxer dog found suffocating in a plastic bag that had been dumped in a skip in Kalkara.
The four-year old dog, later named Gaia, was found alive on Friday morning by a jogger who heard noises coming from the skip. Despite efforts by the staff at San Franġisk Animal Hospital, at Ta’ Qali, to revive her, she died the same evening.
Police sources said officers from the Żabbar police station received a tip-off and investigated the case together with the Cospicua district police. When Dione Galea unearthed Gaia from under other garbage bags, the boxer was gasping for air and foaming at the mouth.
Janice Chetcuti from the Animal Welfare Directorate said the dog was extremely dehydrated and had a fever.
A wave of animal cruelty cases swept the island this summer.
Among them, the mixed-breed dog Star succumbed to injuries after being shot in the head and buried alive in a field in Birżebbuġa and three dead female Pharaoh hounds were found floating off Marsalforn tied together.

Unfortunately the sad stories of Gaia and Star who have touched the hearts of so many animal lovers are just the tip of the iceberg. Volunteers who dedicate time and energy in our animal shelters or those who foster stray cats and dogs until they find a loving home, have many a sad story to tell. Some dogs and cats reach our animal shelters in appalling conditions: most are malnourished and infested by parasites, others are injured or disfigured and although many of them are nursed back to health, they will carry a life-long trauma of cruelty and neglect. Sadly, the perpetrators are never caught and although it is beyond me how they can carry the burden of their dirty conscience, they still lurk amongst us causing misery and distress to other creatures, possibly even to humans. I sincerely hope that this fine gentleman gets what he deserves although I am sure it won't go beyond a hefty fine. I would, however, like to add that we should never forget the hundreds of dogs and cats in our shelters who have had a bad start to life and are now waiting to start afresh with new and loving owners.

Jekk qed isiru dawn l affarijiet, forsi huwa it tort taghna ukoll, b taghna, qed nireferi ghal kul min ihobb l annimali, kul min jaf li l annimali bhalna ihossu, bhalna iweggu ugiegh fisiku, u stress mentali. Ahna, li nafu x isarfu l annimali, u li minghajrhom go hajjitna ma noqodux, ahna li naghmluhom parti mil familji taghna, li inraqduwhom maghna, li nighxuwhom qishom irgejjen, irridu naghmlu xi haga, ma jistax ikun li nibqu nisimghu bi stejjer bhal dawn go pajjizna. Hemm bzonn aktar taghlim gewwa l iskejjel, il ministeri tal edukazzjoni u tal MRRA, misshom jimxu id f id fiha dit tragedja.
Meta it tfal, jitaghlmu, kemm huma importanti l annimali, hemmhekk, tispicca it tbatija ta dawn il hlejqiet innocenti.
Hemm bzonn li l ghaqdiet, jaghmlu aktar biex iqajjmu awarness tas sitwazzjoni, jiena naf kemm jahdmu u kemm jidedikaw mil hin taghhom, lil annimali svinturati, imma nahseb li l ewwel, irridu niehdu hsieb dan il fatt hekk sejru, imbaghd hemmhkk, anke l annimali li jigerru barra jonqosu, ghax meta hemm il kuxjenza hemm l imhabba, u meta ikun hemm l imhabba, ma jithallux annimali mitluqa fit toroq.
Hemm bzonn imbaghd li il gustizzja tikopera mal poplu, u mas sens komun, billi tati sentenza xierqa lil bniedem li kien kapaci jaghmel haga bhal din.

The reason that people do not do horrible and sick things is that they have morals and treat others as they expect to be treated. For those with no morals and with no self worth it is the actions of society that generally keep them from doing horrible things. The Times is there to report the news and not make judgements on who should be protected. This spineless piece of journalism has paved the way for others to commit sick offenses against animals and in other avenues in life.

Dear Charmaine ,
They wont even name and shame convicted paedophiles to advise and inform other parents when they are let out of jail and where they are living to take measures to protect their children -so what chance have we to get know this savages' name and why this information shouldn't be in the public domain escapes me!

The sentences given out at our Law Courts have to be much much harsher to serve as a deterrent to others who feel that they can make animals suffer.....otherwise the swift results of the police taking them to court shall serve for nothing ....We turn to the judges and magistrates and humbly suggest that they give these cruel people a hard lesson.....I would suggest a year 's community service with a dog sanctuary. ...

Sadly we keep hearing these horror stories only because we have no harsh penalties and so this goes on and on. A bad name for Malta. HOPEFULLY THE MINISTRY IN FORCE THE LAW.

FULLY AGREE GEORGE - ITS DISGUSTING! WHAT IS THIS MINISTRY WAITING FOR? GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER AND FOCUS ON LAWS THAT ACTUALLY MEAN SOMETHING AS OPPOSE TO NOT LETTING YOUR DOG SWIM AND ALL THE OTHER PETTY LAWS THAT HAVE COME IN TO FORCE CONCERNING ANIMALS! LETS SEE A LAW THAT ACTUALLY STANDS FOR ANIMALS - THESE ANIMALS THAT DO NOT HAVE A VOICE AND SOLELY DEPEND ON US 'HUMANS' FEEDING, CARING AND LOVING THEM - WHICH IN SOME CASES IS CLEARLY NOT THE CASE! SO IN THESE SAD CASES WHERE IS THE LAW - WHERE IS THE BACK UP AND WHERE IS THE LOVE?
