The other day I came across a German friend of mine who was very confused over a sports snippet appearing in The Times that morning.

Apparently a horse and jockey came to grief resulting in the horse having to be put down after being taken back to the stable. The item then went on to say that the jockey was taken to hospital and was in a stable condition.

My German friend asked me whether that meant that after hospital the jockey had to be taken to the stable. I had difficulty in explaining the different meanings of the word stable in this case!
