Everton: Everton have appealed to the English FA against Jack Rodwell’s red card in Saturday’s 2-0 defeat against arch rivals Liverpool. Rodwell was harshly dismissed after a challenge on Luis Suarez in the 23rd minute at Goodison Park. Referee Martin Atkinson showed the 20-year-old a straight red, but television replays showed Rodwell won the ball and made minimal contact with the Uruguayan.
N. Forest: Steve McClaren has resigned as Nottingham Forest manager after just three and a half months in charge. The former England manager quit shortly after Forest were beaten 3-1 by Birmingham at the City Ground.
Naples trouble: A group of Napoli hooligans smashed windows, doors and check-in desks having gone to the Capodichino airport in Naples in the early hours of yesterday to greet their returning team. Around 500 fans went to the airport and covered all the exits waiting for the team to return from Milan, where they had beaten Inter 3-0. However, some of those fans entered the airport and went on the rampage.
Match halted: A Swiss first division match between Grasshopper and Zurich was called off yesterday because of fighting between rival fans. The game was stopped a first time after fans threw firecrackers but restarted a few minutes later. But the referee decided to end the game after 77 minutes because of continued unrest with hosts Grasshopper leading 2-1.
Fan shot: A supporter of Racing Club was shot during a fight with fans of bitter Buenos Aires rivals Independiente yesterday. The incident took place close to Racing’s ground in the run-up to the derby where 1,200 police were on duty. Police said that the wounded man was not seriously hurt while the gunman had escaped. Three fans have been killed in football-related violence in Argentina in 2011.
