She’s relatively new to the music scene, having first come into the public eye in 2007, performing her song Little Islands In Your Heart at that year’s Maltasong Festival.
Since then, Daniela Delicata has recorded other songs, among them Endless with DJ Toby, Infatuation and Jiena Għalik, and more recently, an album with a strong country inclination.
Clearly, this young Maltese artist has her eyes set on more than one musical genre and market.
“I was experimenting with different genres, but always involving the guitar,” she says of her variety of recordings prior to her latest album. Her Maltasong participation was seemingly part of a learning curve.
“Taking part in festivals helps an artist gain experience, and in my case the Maltasong Festival served this purpose. At the moment, I have other priorities, mainly focusing on a combination of country and acoustic music, but who knows, I might take part in the festival again.”
Delicata’s connection with music started when aged six, she started playing the guitar.
“I have always been fascinated by music, particularly the guitar. I started to play folk guitar with church groups, but later on, I decided to I wanted to study the classical guitar. Around the same time, I started taking vocal lessons too.”
Her studies have not been in vain, as her demo album Prickly Pair shows. Featuring 12 tracks penned by British songwriters Douglas Clark and Euan Rose, the album has a dominant country essence, but as Delicata is eager to point out, there are other elements at play too.
“The songs have different stories and infuse various elements, among them reggae and Latin.”
Perhaps the most prominent song on the album, which was co-ordinated by New Courey’s Joe Grech and produced by Philip and Shaun Vella, is the acoustic closing track Singer, which highlights Delicata’s eloquent vocal timbre.
With several songs from the album having already been played on international radio stations in the UK and the US, what’s next for Delicata?
“The feedback to the demos has been very encouraging, so we’re working on more songs to record in the near future, and we’ll keep in touch with our contacts abroad for the right opportunity.”
