US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has written to Foreign Affairs Minister Tonio Borg expressing "deep gratitude for Malta's significant role and generous contributions in support of the Libyan people's aspirations for a free and peaceful Libya".

"Malta acted swiftly and effectively to assist more than 20,000 evacuees, including US citizens, at the onset of violence and established a hub for all subsequent humanitarian assistance to Libya.

"The United States appreciates the crucial operational assistance provided by Malta to the Nato-led operation unified protector, including emergency landing services for Nato planes and your cooperation on the maritime embargo.

"Malta's willingness to expend considerable resources on these efforts reflects your foresight in investing in Libya's future.

"Malta's steadfast commitment to the protection of human rights, the Libyan people, and the Mediterranean region is laudable.

"I have been honoured to work with you to resolve this crisis and look forward to further cooperation as Libya completes its democratic transition," Mrs Clinton said.
