Maltese international footballer Andre Schembri has just signed a one-year deal and joined the Athens based Panionios GSS, after the relegation of his former club to the fourth division.
The Greek Football Association issued the go ahead to the Maltese international to sign a new deal even though the transfer window has closed.
Schembri's aim was always to play in the Greek Super League, however, after the relegation of Olympiakos Volou to the fourth division, the 25-year-old had no other option but to secure a new deal with a new club.
Since the Greek Super League kicked off on August 27, Panionios GSS played four games earning seven points from these games and securing third place in the Greek Super League table.. Schembri trained with his new club for the past two weeks and was able to sign his contract today after being officially presented to the Greek media.
The player will be back in Malta next week due to international matches against Latvia and Israel, respectively.
When contacted, Schembri said that these months had not been easy. His aim is now to remain focused, train hard and do his best to make his debut with Panionios as soon as possible.
Schembri also thanked his former coach Javi Garcia, his team mates and all Olympiakos Volou supporters for the warm welcome he was given during the past few months.
Schembri scored 16 goals last year with Ferencvaros in Hungary. He also scored one goal in the Europa League Qualifiers with Olympiakos Volou F.C.
He embarked on his overseas career with Eintracht Braunschweig (Germany) and later moved on to play for Carl Zeis Jena (Germany), Austria Karnten (Austria) and Ferencvaros (Hungary).
