The government this morning lashed out at a news story on l-orizzont, saying it is a fabrication from top to bottom.

The newspaper reported on its front page that at last Monday's Cabinet meeting, the Cabinet was given written warnings by the Central Bank and ECOFIN about Malta's debt of €4.4 billion and the deficit.

The government said the story was a fabrication and the Cabinet did not even meet last Monday since the Prime Minister was on his way back from New York, where he addressed the UN General Assembly.

It said such a story on Malta's purported financial situation was harmful to the country.

This evening, the government also denied there were any type of warnings from Ecofin or the European Central Bank.
