German injured in unusual traffic accident
A German resident in Malta was injured this afternoon in a traffic accident in Mgarr Road, Gozo.
Informed sources said that the man was driving a VW Polo which appears to have tried to overtake a truck. It hit the truck's double wheel and was thrown onto a wall, bouncing back into the path of the truck for a second collision.
The driver, who was initially thought to have been British, is not believed to have life-threatening injuries.

is it me, or from the dynamics description, and the pic above, one might conclude that the overtaking was being done from the wrong side too?

With so many "Barrack Room" Transport "experts" it is amazing that the Arriva saga was not fully resolved months ago!! Anyway, I think I shall join the band of "experts" and eliminate all of the aforementioned reasons and suggestions for the crash and suggest (for absolutely no valid reason whatsoever) that the incident was caused by a "blow out" on the front nearside tyre of the Polo thereby causing the driver to lose control and strike the truck!!
Whatever the cause, the incident again highlights the need for maxiumum care and attention when driving irrespective of the type of vehicle. Having just returned from our second visit to Malta this year I regret to say that the standard of driving on the Island and driver attention to road safety issues is poor and it is surprising that there are not even more serious injury incidents.

i happened to be in gozo yesterday and drove on the diversion leading to nadur and then turning to ghajnsielem, what impressed me is the nonsense DOUBLE WHITE DOTTED LINE along almost all the road. Such line does not exist

Don't you know that Gozo is well known for its economizing expertise. Dotted lines use half the paint.

I happen to know the truck driver personally and can assure everybody that if there is a serious and careful driver he is one. Moreover I also happened to pass by just a few minutes after that the accident had occured and all I can say is that if the truck driver had not been very careful we would be talking of another traffic death!

It was the VW Polo that "appears to have tried to overtake the truck. Don't blame the roads or the drivers. Blame the car.

Francis, It was "Herbie" the VW Beetle that had a mind of it's own. VW Polos are driver dependent and therefore responsibility must rest with the driver in this case !!!

I read readers' comments posted on timesofmalta.com on a daily basis... and on a daily basis i'm ashamed to be maltese. The incidence of people needing to say silly things is impressive!

Karl you should be not ashamed to be Maltese. Others should be ashamed as I am sure like all humans no one is perfect and like myself and are not therefore in a position to sit in judgement and cast the first stone.
My thoughts are with the injured driver and hope he is ok. Funny that stone throwers forget someone has been hurt.

Mr Farrugia if it bothers you so ashamed to be Maltese, you are free to denounce your Maltese citizenship. Readers are entitled to their opinions whether they happen to agree with you or not. Has nothing to do with being Maltese.

As an introduction to Malta all tourists should be told that truck and heavy vehisle drivers are Kings (emperors) of the road.

frans, are you blaming the truck driver? and if you are, why? he is not the one who tried to overtake.

I tend t agree with Frans Said that truck drivers consider themselves above the law, in fact, just this morning I was driving up a oneway road and came face to face with a truck. Although I was in the right, I had no choice but to reverse as the driver threathened to attack me.

Darn roads again? When you try to overtake another vehicle, you do that at your own risk.

We should also tell them not to drive recklessly. It's not "Only in Malta", others do it as well.

Frans, to begin with article says "A Briton resident in Malta", doesn't really sound like he's a tourist. Secondly, a truck was driving along, the car driver behind it decided to overtake it but things went wrong. What fault does the truck driver has?
