Catania airport closed because of ash cloud

Catania airport was closed tonight because of an ash cloud from renewed activity on Mt Etna.

The airport authorities said they expected the airport to reopen early in the morning.

The last flight took off shortly after 9.15 p.m.

Flights to Malta were not affected.
