More than 89,000 meals were delivered to elderly people through the Meals On Wheels scheme between January and August this year.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Elderly Mario Galea yesterday said that in 2000, 48,632 meals were served. The number increased to 76,607 in 2009 and 86,000 last year.

Dr Galea thanked the staff at St Vincent de Paul residence who prepared an average of 2,500 meals a day.
