The call for expressions of interest in the development of the Marsa Sports Village has been extended by four weeks, until October 25, the government said.

It said that the call was extended following requests by prospective investors who wanted more time to evaluate proposals for the project.

The project will be spread on around 812,000 square metres of land covering a number of sports disciples and will be offering more and better facilities including an equestrian centre, rugby pitches, and a golf academy.

The village will be contributing to the necessary financial sustainability of the sports through partnerships with the private sector, exploiting the commercial potential of the land, expanding sports tourism, increasing financial income and creating new jobs.

Investors would be obliged to develop the sports facilities according to international standards as specified by the sports organisations involved while being in charge of the operation and maintenance over the years.

The prospective developers would also be obliged to provide open spaces for walking, running and cycling. These would be available to the public free of charge.

The sports community would be enjoying facilities of an international level, professional and centralised administration without having a financial burden.

It is calculated there are around 44 sports entities and around 10,000 people who would be benefitting from the new facilities.
