44% of Maltese 'spend more than they earn'
Caritas Malta raises €49,400 in TV programme
Some 44 per cent of the Maltese spend more than they earn, Caritas Malta director Mgr Victor Grech has said. The figure was established during research being conducted by Caritas and which will be released next month.
Mgr Grech was being interviewed during a televised fund-raising programme during which Caritas raised €49,400 from phone-ins. The funds will be used on services which Caritas offers free of charge.
Mgr Grech also expressed his concern about rising personal debts and usury.
The programme, which was broadcast on all of Malta's TV stations yesterday, included features on services offered by Caritas and interviews with, among others, Archbishop Paul Cremona and Mgr Grech, who spoke on Caritas being the beating heart of the Church, reaching out to the people in need.
