September 21, the logical national day

I already had occasion to write stating that Malta’s national day should be September 21! This is elementary and pure logic! Some will say that it was not real independence since the British remained in Malta after that date. This is puerile thinking.

Some will say that it was not real independence since the British remained in Malta after that date.

This is puerile thinking. Even a subsequent Labour government kept the British here until March 31, 1979. The fact remains that on that glorious September 21, 1964, Malta became sovereign! Irrespective of any other arguments and what anyone can say!

Everything that previously was a “reserved matter” and/or under British control, became Mal-tese.

Most of us still remember the pomp and glory, and the great and indefatigable George Borg Oliver, Prime Minister, waving the Independence Declaration. Indeed the Queen despatched none other than her husband, Prince Philip, for such a unique occasion.

The mainstay of our islands, tourism, was born!

Without Independence Day there would have been no Freedom Day, nor Republic Day!

We should put political passions aside and call a spade a spade!
