The Labour Party yesterday accused the government of failing to make the necessary preparations for the introduction of divorce next Sunday.

No investment has been made in resources to cater for this new right in the courts, PL spokesman for justice Jose Herrera said in a statement.

The workload at the Family Court had increased substantially in the past few years and divorce cases would now also fall under its responsibility.

“It’s no secret that there’s a backlog and several people are waiting too long for a decision,” Dr Herrera said, adding that such delays were negatively affecting people’s lives.

Furthermore, there had been no increase in resources to help with matters of mediation, which was also included in the divorce law.

“Such matters are bound to have serious repercussions on the administration of justice,” the PL spokesman said.

Divorce will be introduced after the majority voted in favour in a hotly-contested referendum last May.
