The Lands Department has started an operation to remove 31 illegally-built rooms below the bastions in Marsamxett, close to the ferry pier.

The rooms were illegally built on government land. Some were built of stone, others of wood or metal sheeting. They are used for a variety of purposes including seaside rooms, boathouses and for storage.

The owners were handed eviction notices on September 9.

The operation is being carried out under a heavy police presence.
