Judo: Daniel Lascau has been named as the British Judo Association’s new performance director. Lascau, who was born in Romania but competed for Germany, won World Championship gold in 1991 and represented Germany at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992. British Judo chairman Densign White believes the 42-year-old is the right man to lead Team GB. White said: “Daniel is a world class judo technical expert and leader and we are delighted to secure his services in this critical period of preparation for the London Olympics.”

Rugby Union: Fiji flanker Dominiko Waqani-burotu was yesterday suspended for three weeks for making a dangerous tip tackle during the World Cup Pool D match against South Africa on Saturday, organisers said. The suspension means Waqaniburotu will miss Fiji’s last two Pool D games against Samoa and Wales.

Cycling: Allan Davis, the Commonwealth Games road race champion and former Tour Down Under winner, has become the latest Australian to sign for the nascent GreenEdge team. Although he won bronze on a tough world road championships course in Geelong, Australia last year, the Queensland sprinter failed to make the cut for the road world championships being held in Copenhagen this week.

Badminton: Defending champion Lee Chong Wei and Lin Dan are on a collision course at the Japan Open this week, where Chinese star Lin will be gunning for revenge over his great rival. The world number one Lee, who won the All England Championships for a second year running in March, defeated Lin in three games in the men’s final of last year’s Japan Open to regain the crown he won in 2007.
