A 17-year-old boy has admitted to mugging an elderly woman and received a suspended sentence.

The boy, who cannot be named because he is still a minor, pleaded guilty to stealing a handbag from 64-year-old Antonia Miruzzi on Wednesday in St Paul’s Street, Valletta.

There was a struggle before the boy got away with the bag containing €250 in cash, the court heard.

Magistrate Doreen Clarke jailed him for one year suspended for two and placed him under a supervision order for three years. She also ordered him to pay the full amount back to Ms Miruzzi within six months.

Police Inspectors Keith Arnaud and James Grech prosecuted. Lawyers José Herrera and Noel Bianco appeared for the boy.
