Bayern Munich defender Breno is recovering from smoke inhalation after being taken to hospital yesterday following a fire which destroyed his home in Munich.

The 21-year-old was kept in hospital overnight for observation after breathing in smoke during the fire, which broke out just after midnight, but the club’s director of sport Christian Nerlinger says there should be no lasting damage.

“He was shocked, but he is fine again now,” he reported on the Bundesliga club’s website.

“I am glad that nothing more serious happened to Breno.”

The cause of the fire is currently being investigated by Munich police and fire authorities, with the damage estimated at between half a million and one million euros, according to reports in Munich newspapers.

Breno returned to Munich last summer after a loan spell with Bavarian rivals Nurnberg.

He was originally signed by Bayern Munich in 2008 but has yet to make the breakthrough at the club, making only 21 appearances.
