Police say nearly 50 people have been injured after a regional train hit a car in eastern Germany.

Federal police spokesman Torsten Henkel said the train crashed into the car that was hit by another vehicle and pushed onto the tracks in Lauterbach, between Leipzig and Chemnitz.

He says the driver of the car managed to get out before the accident, but the train couldn't stop in time.

He says three of the train carriages derailed and one tipped over on its side, injuring nine people seriously. Another 40 people received minor injuries.

Rescue crews were on the scene and helicopters flew the most seriously injured to local hospitals for treatment.
