As the wind picked up and the sea got rough yesterday afternoon three bathers got stranded on Cominotto until two lifeguards, based on nearby Comino, swam to their rescue.

The lifeguards were alerted by the friends of the three bathers who had managed to return to Comino before the sea got too rough.

The trained lifeguards, from the Emergency Response and Rescue Corps, swam it to Cominotto and guided the three stranded men back to Comino from where they had left, a corps spokesman said. About half an hour earlier the lifeguards had hoisted a red flag to warn bathers the sea was dangerous to swim in. But the group of friends, who swam across to Cominotto, were already on the tiny island by then.

Meanwhile, the lifeguards also rescued a foreign man who got caught in the Blue lagoon area in Comino.

The lifeguarding service at Blue lagoon is being run on a daily basis till the end of this month. The service is possible due to sponsorship and support from the Malta Tourism Authority, the Gozo Ministry, the Civil Protection Department and Transport Malta.
