“Over the last three years the Kia product family has undergone a complete design metamorphosis, moving from ‘rational mainstream’ to ‘trendsetter’,” Kia claim. Today’s cars have become a fashion statement and not just a model. WIth this philosophy in mind, the Picanto was launched at the Geneva Motor Fair recently and last month in Malta.

It is a vibrant car which coincides with another vibrant merger between United Group and Tumas Group into Cars International Ltd.

Longer than the previous model, and with an extended wheelbase, the new Picanto promises more passenger comfort and increased cargo space. Offered for the first time with a choice of five-door and three-door body styles, Kia claim it is set to “completely redefine its position as one of the most competitive vehicles in its segment”.

The Picanto gives you an immediate sense of belonging once you step in the car. The new Picanto’s suspension and running gear have been developed from the previous model to retain the car’s responsive handling while improving ride quality and refinement.

Rack and pinion steering is fitted for good balance between steering precision, feel and effort, with electric power-assistance as standard. City driving agility is assured by a turning circle of less than 10 metres.

The MacPherson strut front suspension features an increased castor angle for enhanced straight-line driving stability; 12 per cent softer springs and longer wheel travel with shorter (by 20 mm) bump-stops. At the rear, the CTBA (Coupled Torsion Beam Axle) is 60 per cent stiffer (reducing under-steer).

While becoming more stylish, the new 3.6-metre-long Picanto will also remain an extremely practical car. On the outside, overall vehicle length has been increased by 60 mm, and the wheelbase has grown by 15 mm. Although the new Picanto is a larger car with more equipment, clever engineering and greater use of high-strength steel in the bodyshell has resulted in the new model weighing lup to 10 kg less than its predecessor, depending on the model.
