Environmental policy lacks targets and deadlines - PL
Leo Brincat.
All government entities should be involved in the implementation of the National Environmental Policy for this to be a holistic document, the PL's Environment spokesman, Leo Brincat, said this morning.
Addressing a news conference he said that policy lacked targets and deadlines and the few it had were due in the next legislature.
This meant that the present government was failing to make itself accountable.
A Labour government, Mr Brincat said, would take stock of the existing environmental situation and establish some sort of regular monitoring and review system to draw up benchmarks.
Two environmental key issues Malta needed to face, he said, were air quality and environmental health.
The PL, he said, had never shirked from taking difficult decisions in terms of the environment and it would continue to do so in the future.

@ L Brincat
PL policies on any subject - "No Comment" " Our secret" " Very cunning plan" " You think we are going to tell you?"
The people of Malta deserve better than L Brincat and PL

I hope that Mr. Brincat, if he is voted in will keep his promise.
One promise I don't foresee that the MLP will keep is that in relation to environmental health - and more specifically the built environment.
With certain elements in the party strongly entrenched on the property speculators' side, unfortunately, I do not see how this can be the case. This impinges on both the quality of the air and the quality of the landscape so it is an absolute priority, so let us really hope that Mr. Brincat is true to his promises.

1. 'A Labour government, Mr Brincat said, would take stock of the existing environmental situation and establish some sort of regular monitoring and review system to draw up benchmarks.'...this is rather vaguely put showing lack of research thoughout all the years in opposition as well as proper concrete policy and strategy for the future ...quote the phrase '........SOME SORT OF..........'
2.'The PL, he said, had never shirked from taking difficult decisions in terms of the environment and it would continue to do so in the future.' like paying for flushing one's toilet or paying door to door those which have a drainage system like was done in the '96 .'98 era of Dr. SANT when you were Finance minister and tripled car road licenses ? come on Mr. Brincat ...is this BACK to the Future??
MLP believes in DIRECT TAXATION and With MLP in power Direct Taxation will flourish. AT least we know what Mr. Brincat has in mind ...continue doing what he did in the '96 '98 22 months which brought the population down on it's knees.

Can you please tell us how the population stands today, it's probably underground, which is worse off than on it's knees!! And when you mention that under the MLP taxes will flourish, are you trying to make us laugh? If there is one party who has crippled the country with corruption, high taxes, high unemployment, rampant costs, frozen wages, unkept promises, lousy bus service, arrogance and what not, it is the PN.

A labour government would do things different and more responsibly, so says Mr Leo Brincat.
@Mr Brincat
What makes so sure? How about reviewing your own party's track records in green matters when the MLP was in power and take stock on their own achievements/ abuses before making such bold and self righteous statements.
The only difficult decisions ever taken in term of the environment by any of the political parties have been how much can one sacrifice of it for the sake of the amount of won/bought votes.
Why is always people in glass houses who try to throw the largest stones. Let's be honest, the conservation of our environment is in joepardy if left in the hands of either one of the two major parties. The only hope is if the EC starts putting it's foot down in such matters for things to improve.

" The only hope is if the EC starts putting it's foot down in such matters for things to improve"
Can I ask where was the EC when the BWSC saga was brought to their attention? How can the EC be taken seriously when the power station would run on crude oil instead of gas as was promised by GonziPN?
Mr Emanuel Curmi

@Mario Grima
The EC is not really concerned about the drama concerning our new power station because, although it stinks of corruption or just plain incompetence, it is fullfiling it's basic requirement that of improving emissions over a dinosaur system like Marsa's. Otherwise we wudn't be having a saga in the first place because the government wud have simply prolonged the usage of the Marsa Power Station interminably if the EC didn't put it's foot down.
The safe disposal of the sludge arising from oil fuel is another issue because the handling of toxic material involves strict control otherwise this government wud probably let it run thru our drainage system of simply dump it into the sea.
Are you still so naive as to still believe any promises made by either party ?
