Rise in number of part-time workers
Recent statistics showing an increase in the number of part-timers reminded me of a conversation I had with a friend some time ago.
The conversation revolved around the conditions of work in the private sector and how some employers are using part-timers instead of giving overtime work to their employees – naturally to avoid the overtime rate of pay.
More abusive is the fact that many times a company’s workers are employed as part-timers under a different job title while they still perform their regular job. This hurts more as the regular workers who are often not liable to income tax are expected to pay 15 per cent tax on their part-time job.
Complaints with the Labour Office had always elicited the same answer. They are in compliance with the law.
Would it be too much to ask the Labour Office to investigate whether this practice has resulted in the increase in the number of part-time workers?
It is about time the minister who deals with labour looks into the matter.

Part-timers do not enjoy, nor more crucially they are not entiteld too ,the benefits attached to full-time workers and usually are engeged on lesser rates of pay for the dame work,so consequently it is the employer who is the main benficiary of this form of employ .Where are the "protective" unions in this matter ?In any event, what actually constitutes the number of working hours in any given week to be classified as a so-called "part-timer"?

Mr. Peter Murray - the answer to your last questioon can be found in the Employmenmt and Industrial Relations Laws of Malta, and in subsequent Legal Notices informing the general public of any changes there might have been.

Mr Michael Seychell,
The question was a rhetorical one intended for employers who appear not to be aware of of such Labour Laws and Regulations .In any event why didn't you take the trouble to share such an answer with me and the rest of us to amply demonstrate your obvious superior knowledge and intellect?

I used to work in a 5 star hotel and there were a lot of people who were employed as part time but still did 50+ hours each week. You may say but maybe it was just for the summer or something. But know this went on far more than the summer and some cases up to a year and a half. The worker always afraid to ask for full time employment for fear in reduction of his hours. The worker was always underpaid(employed as a commis-waiter but doing the job a bartender) and was also never paid for the sick-leave and didn't have actual leave. This is the state of part-time workers that this governments is creating so much of
