I have just returned from a harrowing day at Mater Dei emergency ward where my mother was admitted for injuries sustained in the accident quoted here. Thankyou for the comic relief supplied by comments posted regarding my accident this morning..I cannot resist the temptation to further enlighten the superbly enlightened contributers who, without being present, know that the cause of the accident was sudden braking because of the speed camera....
While driving my Nissan Micra at the appropriate speed, I stopped when the traffic lights switched to amber, in order to allow a pedestrian to cross the road. While stationary, my car was rammed by a double decker bus, whereupon my car flipped into the air and landed at right angles with its original position, bang on the metal crash barrier.
Meanwhile the speed camera was only an innocent bystander.....better a speed camera than some opinionated know-it-all with nothinhg better to do than amuse all and sundry!

@ Mr Joseph N Attard: drivers usually flash lights to those who are driving very slow on the fast lane, hopefully you are not one of them because that is as bad as someone driving fast and swerving through traffic.

... all thanks to the adjacent speed camera!

... it's thanks to the way people approach the speed camera, that is: at full speed and abruptly going down to 60km/hr cos of the camera.
Don't blame the camera, blame the people (from what I gather you're one of the) that see a speed camera as a fine (so just avoid it and go on) and not as something to protect them from an accident.

Now that's a bit thick Mr Mallia. Without any reference to the present incident, I see what you are implying at the Mriehel by-pass daily. Idiots fly by Gasan showroom at 100 kph or more. They have cut it down really fine, and at the appropriate distance from the speed camera, they suddenly brake down to 60 kph just to be on the safe side. Once out of camera range again, they quickly accelerate to well over the legal 80kph, weaving in and out of traffic as if their lives depended on it,often flashing lights and honking at anyone who dares to drive legally. That is why I have always maintaines that fixed speed cameras are there only as cash cows. If we want to stop the cowboys, hand held radar traps at unannounced spots are the answer.

Speed cameras are NOT tax collectors, but a reminder to all that speed KILLS.

Mr/s Cuschieri
I beg to differ
with the ridiculously low speed limits 'on Malta's arterial roads'
it is evident that government and MTA are out to dish fines rather than protect drivers......

A.Cuschieri, cameras are there to raise money and not for safety. If whoever decided to introduce them reall had safety in mind they would have been istalled in busy main roads, near schools etc not in by-passes.

Indeed A Cushieri.
The speed limit is say 70 Km, drivers should adhere and drive consistently at 70 Km... and not 100 then slam on the brakes.

@ Catania: That is exactly what I was implying...
