Valletta Subbuteo Club kicked off their international commitments by taking part in the Welsh Grand Prix, held last weekend in Cardiff.
The Valletta team was made up of Derek Conti, Samuel Bartolo, Mario Camilleri, Jason Pisani, Christian Thomas and Chris Short.
Bartolo, ranked 27th, excelled in the individual competition, beating Belgian player Christophe Dheur, ranked 13th, 2-1 in the final.
Boosted by Bartolo’s success, the Citizens, ranked 71st, competed in the teams’ tournament the following day. They were drawn against Atlas TFC of Greece, ranked seventh, and UK side Kent Invicta (39th) in the group stage.
Valletta underlined their fine form as they outclassed Atlas 3-0 and Kent 4-0 to top their group. In the quarter-finals, the Citizens saw off another British team, Yorkshire Phoenix, 4-0 to set up a semi-final clash with Italian side ASCT Sessana 1982 (ranked 30th).
The Maltese outfit maintained their winning run to reach the final where they met SC Stembert who are ranked eighth. Valletta cruised to a 3-0 win over SC Stembert to capture the Welsh title.
