PN rubbishes Sant’s claim of Gaddafi link with EU bid

The Nationalist Party has des-cribed as “complete hogwash” the claim by Alfred Sant that the Gaddafi regime financed the PN’s pro-EU membership campaign.

The allegation was made by Dr Sant in an opinion piece in last Sunday’s Torċa.

According to Dr Sant, the Nationalist Party had convinced the Gaddafi regime that having Malta in the EU would provide Libya with a direct source of information about goings-on in European Council meetings.

As a result, Libyan funders backed the PN’s pro-EU membership campaign, Dr Sant claimed, pointing out that his source was “an influential person within Gaddafi’s Libya”.

In its statement, the PN dis-missed the allegation and called on Dr Sant to substantiate it with “raw facts”.

Dr Sant, it said, was still bitter about the defeat of his EU “partnership” proposal seven years ago and would do better to explain what financial assistance the Labour Party had received from the Gaddafi regime.

The PN also called on the Labour Party to disassociate itself from Dr Sant’s allegations.

Once the Gaddafi regime is over, there is no reason to stop Dr Alfred Sant from identifying his source to substantiate his allegation.
It is highly irresponsible to "create the truth", a phrase attributed to the socialist Peter Mandelson (who had to resign twice from a cabinet post for doing just that) by inventing a rumour that cannot be proved or disproved.
Malta, and history, deserve better from its politicians.

I will put it to you this way Mr Saliba. If this allegation was unfounded, the PN would have called the police in as it is slander. I dont think they will as the truth will then come out. Lets see what happens
