Meat production rises, but price of beef goes up by 25 per cent
The average price of beef per kilogram rose by just over 25 per cent compared to 2010, according to the National Statistics Office.
The price increase, to €3.06 per kilo from €2.43, reflected a 33.4 per cent drop in the number of cattle slaughtered. Despite the significant decrease in beef production, total meat output rose by 0.8 per cent.
Broiler chicken meat prices rose by 3.4 per cent and the price of pork per kilo remained on a par with that in 2010.
Although the number of slaughtered broiler chickens declined by 5.5 per cent, broiler meat production increased by 7.5 per cent compared to last year. The decline in the number of slaughtered broilers was mitigated by an increase in the average carcass weight of the broiler chickens slaughtered.
The NSO also reported a slight increase in the number of pigs slaughtered, up to 20,624 from 20,430.

Is the increase in carcass weight due to more fat on each carcass as well as far more water? The latter seems to appear in massive quantities from a chicken when it has been oven cooked in a cooking bag.
