A ship loaded with water, food and medicine for the Libyan people left Malta for Tripoli this afternoon.

The Al Entisar, a Libyan fishing vessel, is ferrying €100,000 worth of goods donated by the German Embassy in Malta.

All goods were bought locally and sent with the collaboration of the Civil Protection Department, the Office of the Prime Minister and I Go Aid Foundation.

Apart from the German goods - that included water, medicines and baby food - the ship also transported donations made by Maltese people and several other organisations.

So far the Maltese government has sent more than 500 tonnes from 600 tonnes of water, 500 blankets, as well as medicines and food.

German ambassador Hubert Ziegler, who was present at the quay while the ship was being loaded, said he was glad that his country could use Malta as a hub to help the Libyan people.

The ship is expected to arrive in Tripoli tomorrow.
