Fireworks fired from Mellieha Church in synchronised show
Footage: Josef Cauchi
Fireworks were let off from Mellieha parish church last night on the eve of the feast of the Nativity of Our Lady, celebrated today in the town.

The fireworks were synchronised to music, were watched by a large, appreciative crowd.

These events are not organised by the church.
People from every walk of life in every village and town donate of their own free will towards these fireworks

Hi From Australia. Interesting to see references to and people's understanding of "Church". Joe refers to Church as Roman Catholicism. He's probably closer to the truth than those who call the place where we worship - church.
The CHURCH is the whole body of believers in Jesus Christ as our risen Saviour. Jesus Christ was not known for preaching in buildings, in fact one of his most celebrated places was a mountainside. Provided safety issues are addressed sensibly and the precinct is respected as a place of worship, what is wrong with drawing people, Christians and non Christians, to a place where God's Church worships.?.

Super show. Kurja should reconsider its decision not to re-issue this permit again for next year. Also if other parishes want to do the same show the same permits should be issued to all. Why did it take so long this year to ussue the permit and it had to be the intervention of the highest autority in the church for this show to take place ?
Well done to all for a special feast in Mellieha both Internal and external.

Why want to stop the fireworks and the church is the property of the Kurja the church is the property of the people of the village because they put the money to built and worked for nothing how much money the Kurja have put out I ask stop the feast the fire works and you see how much moor people loose the church the church should be happy to see the people get toghter and enjoy the feast the Kurja have much moor biger problems to solve and work on than the simple fireworks.

I want to congratulate everyone involved in such a show, but I must also point out that a similar show has been seen on the 25th of June, in Siggiewi from the St Nicholas Parish Church as seen in the below video.

I would like to make my congratulations to the people organising this event awaited every year by all maltese people and tourists being present at Mellieha. Yesterday I was there and the atmosphere was one unique and this is how a feast should be celebrated. Be there to know...
I truly hope that the coming year this event will be held again. I would be very sorry to hear that someone for some ridculous reason would ban such event as this is how Malta and its uniqueness are to be promoted and give the rightous honour for those preparing the event. For those who argue that the church shouldn't be used for such things, I tell you that there is no such damage being done in the building. Please if you do not know how such things are made and the precautions that every organisation is taking to make such display, think twice as I can assure you that every precaution is being taken. There is nothing easy to make it.
For those who do not like such things, do not comment at all, as you would hinder those persons who like such displays (you all have other hobbies that other people may not like) and begin organising the feast as soon as the current one would pass and make all the year trying to think how the feast would be a reason to have the most people to gather in one place and interrelate with each other... at least that's what we do...

I agree with you and I hope that the Curia has a change of heart and let the Melliehin celebrate their feast with all the pomp and circumstance, synchronized fireworks and all. Thanks to the TV and the internet everybody (except for the few) enjoyed the display especially those who could not be there in person. I am talking about the sick and the elderly who could not be present at the Mellieha Square. This spectacular show was seen all over the world thanks to the internet and I guarantee you everybody was awed. To be honest, I don't think it would have the same effect if these synchronized fireworks were to be done anyplace else but from atop the church. I encourage Father Joe, the Local Council and all Melliehin to do everything they can to keep this very spectacular display of synchronized fire display going.

@Mr j Vella
I'm sorry to hear that a person like you thinks that the word 'celebrating' means 'adoring' or 'replacing' God with any saint the feast belongs to.
You should attend to the religious ceremonies that happen in church to see what a village feast is really about.

The display was fantastic but I don't think it was a good idea doing it on the church

What a show! Awesome! Spectacular! Breathtaking! Bellezza! Entertaining!. If as rumoured the Curia is abolishing this spectacular show, where the hell were they when we needed them? This awesome fireworks show brought more Catholics together than any of its' other tactics. Shame on you Archbishop. This fireworks show is quiet and awesome and it amazed a lot of people from all over the country if not all over the world via the internet. I hope Father Joe and all the Melliehin will appeal the Curia's decision to abolish this spectacular show. This is a local spectacular put on by a lot of dedicated local parishioners. This is one show that brings parishioners and outsiders together which the Curia preaches on. So Monsignor have it your way and you will see how many people shy away from your church. Don't you have enough troubles? Leave our show alone and concentrate on more precious matters.

and yet this may be the last time as from next year the parish will no longer be allowed to let off fireworks from the church; it's coming from Kurja...at least that is rumoured...

@Jos Vella
You made my day.
If fireworks will not be allowed and it is coming the 'Church Court' (Kurja) I say thank goodness finally we are starting to be like the rest of God's Church and celebrate the First Commandment and nothing but.

I am certain that those fireworks I witnessed beeing let off the Mellieha church are not the same 'fireworks' the Curia may ban. Those fireworks let off last night are the 'backyard fireworks' variety and some of them are even let off in nightclubs and other confined areas.
The fact that most (aerial types) were let off from the roof of the church and the steeples, they had burned themselves out completely and represented no danger to the public.
Heaven (and the Curia too) forbid that we shall be so clinical as to even prhibit the carrying of matches in our pockets because they too have the potential of scorching sensitive parts of our bodies.
John Zammit-Spiteri
Sep 8th 2011, 20:31
@ john vella
and why is that? what is wrong by making a fireworks display? If it entertains and makes a number of people happy then it is a good cause.why so negative? cant you appreciate that some people enjoy themselves in entertaining others?
I dont understand what joy people get from being spoilsports
Mr Joseph Calleja
Sep 8th 2011, 20:32
@ John Vella. So it is Ok to make a racket and a half with the petards and the likes but you disagree with the church being used to celebrate the Feast of the Vittoria? I wonder how many other Melliehin or others agree with your reasoning. I am sure you were present for this spectacular show and you could see the awe and ohs and ahs that came out of the crowd. This spectacular show does not hurt anybody because except for the music it is quiet and it does not carry on till the odd hours of the morning. Which first commandment are you speaking of? This spectacular show cannot be moved to any other place because it will lose it's impact.

Dear all, especially John Vella who has rather helped (with all the supporters gained as a result of John's comments); thanks for supporting. I fairly believe that if we (Maltese especially Melliehin) can discuss with Kurja at the early stages we may be in time for an eventful and fantastic firework exhibition by the church next year. There is nothing profane, everything happens at the outside of the church and not on the inside....and by the way during the festival there are also prayers. There are some who praise their Saints through prayers, other through dancing, otherss through singing and why not others through fireworks.

Dear Jos Vella
I do appreciate fireworks, in fact fire works is as old as men himself. Even pagans of old displayed fire works.
To have fire works, which is dangerous within itself to celebrate a cause, be it when we win a football game, be it the Queen birthday or what ever is one thing, but to celebrate a Roman Catholic feast is another.
From all over the Island can anyone enlighten me where can I find a feast solely for the Glory of God the Father that our Lord Jesus Christ advised us over and over, do not call me Good 'Only God the Father is Good'. Are we like Moses time, when Moses went on the Mountain we find all excuses to drink and dance, of course we have not seeped so low as to celebrate in front of the golden calf yet.
