Footage: Josef Cauchi

Fireworks were let off from Mellieha parish church last night on the eve of the feast of the Nativity of Our Lady, celebrated today in the town.

These events are not organised by the church.
People from every walk of life in every village and town donate of their own free will towards these fireworks

Hi From Australia. Interesting to see references to and people's understanding of "Church". Joe refers to Church as Roman Catholicism. He's probably closer to the truth than those who call the place where we worship - church.

The CHURCH is the whole body of believers in Jesus Christ as our risen Saviour. Jesus Christ was not known for preaching in buildings, in fact one of his most celebrated places was a mountainside. Provided safety issues are addressed sensibly and the precinct is respected as a place of worship, what is wrong with drawing people, Christians and non Christians, to a place where God's Church worships.?.

I agree with you and I hope that the Curia has a change of heart and let the Melliehin celebrate their feast with all the pomp and circumstance, synchronized fireworks and all. Thanks to the TV and the internet everybody (except for the few) enjoyed the display especially those who could not be there in person. I am talking about the sick and the elderly who could not be present at the Mellieha Square. This spectacular show was seen all over the world thanks to the internet and I guarantee you everybody was awed. To be honest, I don't think it would have the same effect if these synchronized fireworks were to be done anyplace else but from atop the church. I encourage Father Joe, the Local Council and all Melliehin to do everything they can to keep this very spectacular display of synchronized fire display going.

@Jos Vella
You made my day.
If fireworks will not be allowed and it is coming the 'Church Court' (Kurja) I say thank goodness finally we are starting to be like the rest of God's Church and celebrate the First Commandment and nothing but.

I am certain that those fireworks I witnessed beeing let off the Mellieha church are not the same 'fireworks' the Curia may ban. Those fireworks let off last night are the 'backyard fireworks' variety and some of them are even let off in nightclubs and other confined areas.

The fact that most (aerial types) were let off from the roof of the church and the steeples, they had burned themselves out completely and represented no danger to the public.

Heaven (and the Curia too) forbid that we shall be so clinical as to even prhibit the carrying of matches in our pockets because they too have the potential of scorching sensitive parts of our bodies.

@ john vella

and why is that? what is wrong by making a fireworks display? If it entertains and makes a number of people happy then it is a good cause.why so negative? cant you appreciate that some people enjoy themselves in entertaining others?

I dont understand what joy people get from being spoilsports

@ John Vella. So it is Ok to make a racket and a half with the petards and the likes but you disagree with the church being used to celebrate the Feast of the Vittoria? I wonder how many other Melliehin or others agree with your reasoning. I am sure you were present for this spectacular show and you could see the awe and ohs and ahs that came out of the crowd. This spectacular show does not hurt anybody because except for the music it is quiet and it does not carry on till the odd hours of the morning. Which first commandment are you speaking of? This spectacular show cannot be moved to any other place because it will lose it's impact.

Dear all, especially John Vella who has rather helped (with all the supporters gained as a result of John's comments); thanks for supporting. I fairly believe that if we (Maltese especially Melliehin) can discuss with Kurja at the early stages we may be in time for an eventful and fantastic firework exhibition by the church next year. There is nothing profane, everything happens at the outside of the church and not on the inside....and by the way during the festival there are also prayers. There are some who praise their Saints through prayers, other through dancing, otherss through singing and why not others through fireworks.

Dear Jos Vella
I do appreciate fireworks, in fact fire works is as old as men himself. Even pagans of old displayed fire works.
To have fire works, which is dangerous within itself to celebrate a cause, be it when we win a football game, be it the Queen birthday or what ever is one thing, but to celebrate a Roman Catholic feast is another.
From all over the Island can anyone enlighten me where can I find a feast solely for the Glory of God the Father that our Lord Jesus Christ advised us over and over, do not call me Good 'Only God the Father is Good'. Are we like Moses time, when Moses went on the Mountain we find all excuses to drink and dance, of course we have not seeped so low as to celebrate in front of the golden calf yet.
