I would like to support Vivien Gouder on Stuck On Valletta Lane (September 1). Various correspondents have written in the same vein and I had also written on March 10 (Flyover Or Flow Under?)

There is not the slightest doubt that there is hardly any Valletta-bound traffic coming from the direction of Valletta. Taking a prime lane out of circulation in a busy congested roundabout smacks of sadism – or of maso­chism?

Even the traffic light signals area on the west of the roundabout could be simplified by making provision for “filtering” traffic, that is traffic that does not have to cross or weave with other traffic.

Reducing the volume of waiting traffic by eliminating filtering traffic reduces waiting time and relieves congestion.
