PM launches green dream

A 10-year plan for Malta to address its environmental issues and establish a green economy was launched yesterday by Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and Environment Parliamentary Secretary Mario de Marco.

The draft National Environmental Policy, which is now open for public consultation, spans practically every eco issue, ranging from climate change to noise pollution. It also talks about job creation and environmental taxation.

The government aims to double the number of green jobs (to 10,000) by 2015, when it will also ensure that half of all public procurement adheres to the EU’s Green Public Procurement criteria.

The plans include halting the loss of biodiversity and preparing the country for climate change and other environmental risks.

The policy deals with conservation of resources such as stone, fresh water and soil, as well as the importance of improving the physical appearance of towns and villages through, for example, the creation of more open spaces and pedestrian zones.

The policy also puts into perspective the government’s plans for eco-Gozo, where most of the plans will be fast-tracked.

Many of the roughly 200 proposals are already being implemented but the document is intended to provide a holistic account of the government’s direction when it comes to the environment.

In a four-page supplement, The Times today summarises the 100-page document, which can be found on www.opm.gov.mt/ambjent.

Peppi, minghajr ma kienet l-intenzjoni tieghek, spjegajt sewwa d-differenza bejn il PN u l-PL.Il-PL ma jridx jispjega kif se jmexxi jekk isib ruhhu fil-gvern u ghal kuntrarju l-PN fil-gvern qed isawwar pjan kif il-PAJJIZ ghandu jimxi fil-futur. Il-PL mohhu f'haga wahda biss - dik li jakkwista il-poter akkost ta kollox u mhux ipoggi l-interess ghal pajjiz l-ewwel u l-partit it-tieni.Grazzi ta l-ispjegazzjoni li rnexxielek ittijilna f'sentenza qasira.

How about the hypocrites who were dead set against the Sant'Antnin recycling plant, going as far as requesting the EU to suspend development funds? How about not taking any steps to close Maghtab during their short-lived reign? How about the hypocrites who alleged irregularities in the granting of the contract for the power station extension while they were in contact with a competing bidder, causing a several month delay which means the Marsa power station has to stay in operation longer than permitted?

How green is the PL? Very, very green with envy of seeing so many progressive projects undertaken by the government and which they never even dreamed about.

Mr Angus Black if you are so in favour of the Sant'Antnin plant, how about telling us where you live and whether you will be ready to accept such a plant near your property?

Too little too late, I agree 100%. What about the mapping of our (?) public land and the  countryside; is this included in the 10 year plan - Green Dream?  I wonder! I hope it's not just that, A Dream! The government wants to conserve our limstone or what's left of it, fresh water and soil, again, what's left of them. This would be amusing  if it weren't so serious!Francis Sammut
