PM launches green dream
A 10-year plan for Malta to address its environmental issues and establish a green economy was launched yesterday by Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and Environment Parliamentary Secretary Mario de Marco.
The draft National Environmental Policy, which is now open for public consultation, spans practically every eco issue, ranging from climate change to noise pollution. It also talks about job creation and environmental taxation.
The government aims to double the number of green jobs (to 10,000) by 2015, when it will also ensure that half of all public procurement adheres to the EU’s Green Public Procurement criteria.
The plans include halting the loss of biodiversity and preparing the country for climate change and other environmental risks.
The policy deals with conservation of resources such as stone, fresh water and soil, as well as the importance of improving the physical appearance of towns and villages through, for example, the creation of more open spaces and pedestrian zones.
The policy also puts into perspective the government’s plans for eco-Gozo, where most of the plans will be fast-tracked.
Many of the roughly 200 proposals are already being implemented but the document is intended to provide a holistic account of the government’s direction when it comes to the environment.
In a four-page supplement, The Times today summarises the 100-page document, which can be found on www.opm.gov.mt/ambjent.

Consider this please~
The Green Dream is all for us and for the future of the generations to come and the ones growing up now, it is also up to us not only the goverments nor EU to support this, if we don't want this change and improvement it will never be no matter who governs, we are all at risk and if we love our country as we all say we do ~ Then lets start and do something for it and for our Mother Earth!!!

Gonzi is clutching at Green straws in a forlorn hope of recovering some credibility. He stood back and allowed far too much Greenery to be 'developed' by his chums and now he expects us to believe that he's developed an environmental conscience ! - As if !
Or perhaps he thinks we haven't noticed that when Governments start thinking 'Green' it is because they know it is a way of introducing new forms of TAXES that the gullible will accept.
Green dream ? Yeah, right ! - More like a Pipe dream. I just hope that Mario De Marco's career isn't irrepairably damaged by working with Gonzi on this 'policy'. - Or perhaps the PM dreamed that some of Mario's ability and popularity will rub-off onto him and he will be re-elected ? - Hmmm. Keep on dreaming Lawrence.

DREAM ON.......for anything effective!

Keep on dreaming then !!! How can we start dreaming about Malta going green when this government has been intent in choking us with roads jam packed with vehicles of all shapes and sizes omitting exhaust in all hours of the day . It is atrociuos how our roads are always full of traffic . To make matters worse , to get anywhere from A to B on this minute island , we are forced to drive in circles on our multitude of one way streets using up untold amounts of fuel . Well , the more fuel one buys , the more tax our government takes out of our pockets. So , fill the island with one ways and make joe public ommit more exhaust . Thats the way !!!!!

What's the PL dream, Mario? All the PL delivered in the past were nightmares.

What a bunch of hypocrites to hear of a 'green dream' by the same person who some years ago increased the areas good for development. And just a few months ago we had the case of development in Wied il-Ghasel Valley, as if it was not enough to have this valley already destroyed with buildings reaching its banks on both sides all way long, destroying all of its natural springs and much of the original vegetation and eco-system (rabbits, hedgehogs, snakes, etc). Maybe we are to expect more sanctioning of illegal development in this same valley as happened just before last general election with the sanctioning of 2 such structures directly within the valley itself, one belonging to the father of female Mosta counciller, and the other of the father of a labour representive in Parlament.
Mr Angus Black

How about the hypocrites who were dead set against the Sant'Antnin recycling plant, going as far as requesting the EU to suspend development funds? How about not taking any steps to close Maghtab during their short-lived reign? How about the hypocrites who alleged irregularities in the granting of the contract for the power station extension while they were in contact with a competing bidder, causing a several month delay which means the Marsa power station has to stay in operation longer than permitted?
How green is the PL? Very, very green with envy of seeing so many progressive projects undertaken by the government and which they never even dreamed about.
Mr Tony Camilleri
Sep 7th 2011, 10:28
Mr Angus Black if you are so in favour of the Sant'Antnin plant, how about telling us where you live and whether you will be ready to accept such a plant near your property?
Mr Patrick Zahra
Sep 6th 2011, 12:01
" Judge us on what we do not what we say" Dr Gonzi's statement prior to the 2008 election! While dreaming about a green island, this government has delivered an HFO fuelled plant which besides its negative impact on air quality will be producing tonnes of hazardous waste which will be paraded daily through our streets
Ms G Portelli
Sep 6th 2011, 11:56
Does this policy include strong planning measures that stop the loopholes to limit encroachment on green belt areas or does it merely reinforce a political culture that puts the interest of developers and the quick buck credo above national interest?
Mr John Portelli

@ Bernard Storace,
How about reading the document first and do something constructive by giving your feedback? We ALL can do something to make it a better place to live in. Why not join one of the Environmental NGOs. And if you are already a member of one, then you can appreciate the work being done by these NGOs as there is a lot that can be done. A lot of effort was put into this document, and all concerned, that is all of us, should at least read it before criticizing.

"the importance of improving the physical
appearance of towns and villages through, for example, the creation of
more open spaces and pedestrian zones."
To achieve this villages need to remain villages, and not inter-connected villages. Take for example Lija, Balzan, and Attard. One cannot anymore know in which village he or she is, and you know you are in Iklin because you cross the bypass!! In some parts of Malta is too late, but where possible, the government should make sure that villages no longer get connected one another and make it possible for someone to realise he is leaving one village and entering another (Not with a sign, but with a large patch of farms between villages). To achieve this the government eliminate the building extention given in the last election. Only like that can this government be credible on its green initiative!!

Recently I asked my hairdresser how I was supposed to dispose of the containers and other chemical tainted material after I dye my hair. To my surprise, he said that he, and of course all the Hairdressers in Malta and Gozo dispose of these contaminators along with the normal garbage. Surely, the Government can set up a system where these items are gathered in a single place (within a special container, such as is done with batteries) and disposed of in a similar manner. Say with special personnel collecting the bins on set days. It might well be that the present disposal system bulked with the rest of the waste, is not that dangereous. It is up to the experts to judge.

A little bit too late I'm sure. After allowing MEPA to run riot in the village core and ODZ without lifting a finger, now we become holier than thou.......Shame. So many natural beauty spots have been ruined forever (with more to come???) to satisfy the greed of the developer(s) and fatten MEPA. Heritage buildings have been destroyed together with their beautiful gardens and trees have been butchered, sawed down and made to disappear to widen roads....oh ye....from 4 lane to 2 lane with very wide kerbs/pavements/walkways and not a tree in sight. This has accelerated pollution deposits because of crawling traffic, snarled traffic, long slow queues etc.
Another puff of smoke which will soon blow away in the wind like all other ECO promises before this. Pay a visit to Gozo and see the scores of trees which have been decimated forever because the transport ministry says so...ECO Gozo my foot. We shall wait and see!!!

Too little too late, I agree 100%. What about the mapping of our (?) public land and the countryside; is this included in the 10 year plan - Green Dream? I wonder! I hope it's not just that, A Dream! The government wants to conserve our limstone or what's left of it, fresh water and soil, again, what's left of them. This would be amusing if it weren't so serious!Francis Sammut

pity this PM did not think of such a plan BEFORE extending the permissable building zones prior to the last election. Example Marsascala allowing construction of more flats practically next door to the Knights Stables.
Who does this PM take us for?

The government is too weak to stop unwanted junk mail filling my mailbox (reduce my carbon footprint please).
This junk mail, is a total complete useless waste - and happening daily to tens of thousands of households.
Malta post must be directed not to accept or to handle this junk mail - it is not addressed to me personally so it is not mine (my name is not 'the occupier').
