Depression: Bundesliga side Hanover’s second choice goalkeeper Markus Miller announced yesterday he was mentally exhausted and would be checking himself into hospital for treatement. His dramatic announcement comes just two years after Hanover’s German international goalkeeper Robert Enke committed suicide aged just 32 after suffering from depression for years.
Baines: Everton defender Leighton Baines has been ruled out of England’s squad for their Euro 2012 clash with Wales after suffering a hamstring strain in training, it was confirmed yesterday. Baines has returned to his club ahead of tonight’s Group G game at Wembley after a hamstring tweaked in training on Sunday failed to respond to treatment, an FA spokesman said.
Hooligans: A young football fan was fatally stabbed and two others were injured early yesterday in an organised hooligan clash on the island of Crete. The victim, a 21-year-old Panathinaikos fan, was pronounced dead on arrival at a hospital in Iraklio. He had been struck repeatedly with a knife in the fight between some 30 supporters of local outfit OFI on the one hand, and an unlikely alliance between Panathinaikos, their arch-rivals Olympiakos Piraeus, and local fourth-division club Herodotus.
Barcelona: European champions Barcelona will open a football school to polish young talent in Warsaw this week as Poland gears up to co-host Euro 2012 with Ukraine. The school, which will operate on a fee basis, will start operating on Thursday at four sports centres across Warsaw.
