A sophisticated new linear accelerator for the treatment of cancer patients has been commissioned at Boffa Hospital.

The Health Ministry said the new equipment was commissioned after an extensive period of training and testing.

The €1.2m project included the building of a new bunker. The reception area and rooms used by patients were also upgraded.

Health Minister Joseph Cassar said patients deserved the best service they could get, free of charge. The new equipment marked higher quality care in a better environment. He also noted that there would be three linear accelerators in the new Oncology Centre being built at Mater Dei, which will eventually replace Boffa Hospital.
