Killing birds is cruelty to animals, should be banned
Henry Fenech Azzopardi accused me of making a mountain out of a molehill (The Sunday Times, August 21). I was merely astonished that some hunters such as Mr Fenech Azzopardi did not know what they were killing.
They did not even know that birds are animals.
Now that this fact has been firmly established, I trust we all agree that shooting birds is tantamount to cruelty to animals and should be banned.
No mountain or molehill. Just pure philosophical deduction.

Thallatx il hass mal patata. We are now talking of legal shot birds and not illegal protected birds. I repeat I may join you in any protest against the killing of illegal birds but hunting of eatable birds is legal and there forever.
As regards animals I already gave you credit for your ingenious scoperta but you have never queried my claim that eating lobsters is far more cruel than shooting birds. These are boiled alive for your pleasure to enjoy treating out a friend for the eveniing.
Enjoy your early waking up in the morning to the sounds of gun fire and goodluck to you.

What a load of rubbish some of you have managed to write. I do not expect anything less since ignorance is bliss where some hunters are concerned since, people like Henry Fenech Azzopardi do not even know that birds are animals.
No, the bangs in the morning do not disturb me as I am an early riser but they disturb our tourists and my fellow countrymen.
You should all travel to islands like Corfu to see how birds are respected and have Corfiots enjoy the thousands of birds in the sky.
I have not seen one bird this year except sparrows. The season has started. We will see how many protected birds will be killed giving Malta the worst name in Europe.

Actually, a wild bird killed instantly by an expert shot undergoes less stress and suffers less pain than a chicken killed in a slaughterhouse or in a home, by having its throat slit. The old saying about running around like a headless chicken gives us a graphic and - if you think about it - macabre picture of home-slaughtering.
I am against hunting and against animal cruelty but do not automatically consider the two as being synonymous. The arguments against hunting are purely of an environmental nature, so much so that Birdlife, for example, considers itself an environmental NGO, not an animal welfare society.

I have no intention to reply again to your adnausam remarks which will eventually get you no where. Hunting will never be banned and your protests will never reach their mark because we in Malta everyone knows each other and your preoccupation is the bang everymorning that wakens you up and not the love for animals or birds call them what you like.
On the contrary I expect that the bag limits for next spring season will be the maximum numbers since the autumn takings will not prejudice the quota due to the restrictions on trapping.
This will result in more bang bang in Bidnija and more bla bla by Mr Mizzi. Cheer up and give us a break I am sure you can afford a long holiday abroad during the hunting seasons.

How presumptuous of you, Maurice Mizzi. Primarily, NO, I do not agree that hunting should be banned. Your selfish wishes do not necessarily belong to other tolerant, educated and respectful individuals! What "philosophical deduction" do you actually refer to?! Hunting has been practised the world over since time immemorial. Having a selfish, arrogant and intolerant individual who opines that hunting should be banned, does not require any philosophy whatsoever. You just have to bear with it, Sir!!! It is not only birds which are animals BUT the chicken, rabbit, fish and meat you consume, Sir! Don't you feel for them when these are presented on your plate?!!!!

Sylvana Zarb Darmanin is correct. While it must be conceded that some people's "philosophical deductions" lead them to the belief that lesser animals should enjoy the same sanctity of life as humans, those people represent only a tiny, and unquestionably eccentric, minority. What proportion of society are vegans?
Anyway, if God didn't want us to eat animals, why did he make them out of meat?

Mr. Maurice Mizzi is correct.
Recently we had the very sad story of that dog, 'star', that was found buried but still alive after someone shot him, thinking it was dead. This dog was found, treated and cared for until it eventually succumbed due to the wounds it had been inflicted and inevitable infections. The suffering which that dog must have gone through must be immaginable.
Now, how many birds are shot by hunters that remain alive, still able to fly a bit and then die either due to the wounds or, physically weakened by the lead shot, fail to continue on their migratory journey and end up drowned in the cruel sea.
Ther is no difference between the dog's sad story, a story that made the headlines and resulted in a prison sentence for the perpetyrator of this crime, and birds that are shot and injured but initially remain strong enough to live a few hours or dys until they die. How much suffering do these birds go through?

Why not ask Mr. Mizzi to sponsor your fertile imagination? Between the two of you you could start our first circus (animal free that is!!)

To-day is Sunday I wonder and ask myself what Mr. Mizzi is going to have for his mid-day and evening meals?

Will the proposed wind farm for Mr Mizzi's locale create any further noise pollution plus ancillary disturbances?

How Pathetic Mr Mizzi can be. Does he honestly love birds/animals? Or he just want to ban hunting not to be disturbed with the morning shots coming from around his Villa? If my mind serves me well, Mr Mizzi always complained about the disturbance in Bidnija but never mentioned animal cruelty. If Mr Mizzi loves the animals so much I suggest that he will open his garden and welcome stray animals and not just bla bla because he has an agenda. I also expect that Mr Mizzi's garden is full of rats if he loves the animals so much.
