The two main theatres in Victoria are undergoing renovation works in preparation for the new theatre season.

The works being carried out on the Astra theatre by the La Stella Philarmonic Society include the rebuilding of the stage, which in a few weeks’ time will host the opera Norma. The opera is part of the annual Festival Medit-erranea. A few metres down the road, Leone Philarmonic Society is overseeing works on the roof of the Aurora theatre.

The roof, made of asbestos, is being replaced with one that will feature photovoltaic panels. So far half the roof has been replaced.

Work is expected to be completed in time for the showing of the opera Tosca next month. Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono explained that the projects conformed with the aims of the Eco-Gozo scheme in terms of improving the cultural identity of the island and would be benefitting from €100,000 worth of funds for NGOs.

She praised the initiatives of the two societies that are run by volunteers.
