Vintage cars to race around Mdina
The Valletta Grand Prix will be moving to Mdina this year, with the race of vintage cars due to be held in October.
The event, now in its third edition, was launched this morning by Parliamentary Secretaries Mario de Marco and Clyde Puli.
It will see vintage cars wind their way through the ditch and streets around the old capital in races which stat from Triq L-Ghajn Hammiem, downhill to Triq L-Istazzjon, Triq il-Maltin Internati u Eziljati, Triq il-Kav Vincenzo Bonello and Triq L-Gharriqin (Finish).
The popular event has been moved to Mdina because of rehabilitation works in Valletta.
Events start on October 21 with the Concourse d'Elegance. Races will be held on October 22 and 23.
Dr de Marco said events such as this boosted Malta's tourism product, including the sport component.
They also helped even out seasonality in tourist arrivals.
Mr Puli underlined the strong interest that there is in motorsport . He said that sports tourism last year attracted 41,000 tourists, pumping €2.2 million into the economy, twice the amount in in 2009 when a scheme to promote sports tourism was announced.
The events are organised by the Valletta Grand Prix Foundation

The solution is there. It's called build-a-racetrack. That would be the most effective sleeping policeman or speeding camera out there. Why would one want to drive fast in the road when he/she knows that there's a safe racetrack to do so! Also why let so many Maltese and Gozitan people waste their money to go to Sicily to win? With a racetrack in Malta, these enthusiasts can win on our land and with the amount of tourism we'll get here, I assure you we will all be winners. Now go ahead and call me delusional.
Ismael.

hill climbs event are being held here in Malta from the 1950's..... I never saw such publicity from the government regarding these events. Also, how many Maltese went abroad and won international events with cars and even trucks like Mr Farrugia mentioned and never given the deserved publicity. Santa pod records were smashed I do not know how many times by Maltese. Is this not publicity to Malta or what.
I appeal from here to Dr de Marco to consider the investment in motor sports and build a racing track. I know people who are spending a lot of money to go race their machines in Sicily. Why can't exploit this investment opportunity and attract foreign people to race here.
I wish also to mention the Maltese world champion in the P1 racing. If one considers all this, should really consider to exploit the great potentials in motor sport.

Common sense has prevailed at last!
We had to put up with the disruption in Valletta last year, not to mention the danger to the unprotected public from these dangerous old cars. Plese don't ever let it return to Valletta!
If it was up to me I would banish these gereatric boy racers and their old bangers to Hal Far and persuade them to have a 'demolition derby'!

I wish to congratulate the two Hon. Parliamentary Secretaries for the support to this event.
But it is difficult for me to understand the policy of the present administration concerning motor sports when an event for classic cars is promoted in such a way at the same time that the only operating venue for the Island Karting Club is closed down! Why cannot the temporary karting circuit be allowed to function until the new track is developed?
This weekend, the city of Baltimore is promoting the Baltimore Grand Prix spending millions for a temporary street circuit, and we in Malta have a small karting circuit and the authorities concerned decide to destroy it! What has been the contribution of the Malta Motorsport Federation in this decision, if any?

Agreed! I'm a grease monkey myself and it is obvious that motorsport is very lacking, even though we have huge local talent which win championships abroad in drag racing with a truck, let alone in the other categories!
