The widows of five well-known artists have each donated a piece of art to be auctioned during L-Istrina 2011 in aid of the Malta Community Chest Fund on December 1.
Tereża Camilleri, widow of Antoine Camilleri (1922-2005), donated a study of works in pen and ink submitted for the church in Paceville (not the Millennium chapel) and which were not accepted. He then went on to do the tabernacle and the altar.
The widow of Anton Agius (1933-2008), Marie-Louise, donated a stone sculpture and Antoinette Diacono, widow of Victor Diacono (1915-2009), presented the charity organisation headed by President George Abela a drawing entitled On The Promenade.
Doris Fenech, widow of George Fenech (1926-2011), donated It-Tieġ ta’ Kana, an etching (Rome 1957) and Rosa Portelli, widow of Frank Portelli (1922-2004), handed over a lithograph titled Wickedness.
All five widows met the President and Mrs Margaret Abela at San Anton Palace. Dr Abela described the value of the pieces they donated as “priceless”.
Over the past two years, the auction of art works in aid of the Community Chest Fund raked in €90,000 and Dr Abela expressed confidence that this year’s would be another success, thanks to all the artists who donated their work.
A total of 50 works of art have been donated for this year’s fine art auction by both local and foreign artists. Their work can be viewed at mccf.org.mt, which is updated regularly.
The works will be on show at the Palace in Valletta from November 21.
