A few weeks ago this newspaper carried a lengthy article about the first living, non-related organ donor in Malta. The article included an appeal to become an organ donor and supplied a website address for an organisation promoting organ donations in Malta, which was supported by Bank of Valletta.

I decided to become an organ donor right then and logged in to the website. I noted it had not been updated in quite a while but I dutifully filled out the form which registered me as an organ donor. A card to be carried confirming this fact was supposed to be sent to me within a few days. On the “contact us” form of the same site I asked an additional question. You know what is coming, of course. Indeed, nothing happened, nothing at all!

So, I wonder: Is there no shortage of donors in Malta? What happened to BoV’s support? And most of all, how is it possible that such an article appears without any communication to the beneficiary organisation, which, quite possibly, has ceased to exist? Is it still possible to become an organ donor in Malta?

The first living, non-related organ donor in Malta must be quite disappointed with the minimal impact his story has had on increasing organ donation.
