Cell phone termination rates reduced
The Malta Communications Authority said today that it had reduced the mobile phones termination rate by 32%. Mobile termination rates (MTRs) are the charges that mobile operators charge other network operators to terminate calls on their respective mobile networks.
The Authority said that its decision followed a thorough review of feedback received from stakeholders, including the European Commission as part of a consultative process on the subject.
The decision brings the current rate down to 4.18c per minute.
"This decision reflects the MCA's efforts to keep reducing the MTRs in line with the principles laid out by the recommendations of the EU Commission to base such rates on efficient costs which avoid competitive distortions for the ultimate benefit of end-users at large," the MCA said.
The new rate came into force today.

What about the absurd international sms rates....more expensive to text locally than when you are roaming...isnt that a clear sign of legalised rip-off? all operators are part of this cartel...with prices sarcastically fixed throughout...have a look at all their website and see if they charge less than 23c per international sms!

"Or am I missing something?"
It's advantageous for the customer, at the expense of the operator with the most customers (who would be receiving more calls from other networks than smaller networks).

A step in the right direction.
Hopefully the MCA will keep the pressure to reduce MTRs further ASAP.

If you are an operator, and you have to reduce the charge you make to other operators, you will not be making less money because other operators will also have to reduce the amount they charge you.
So the enforced reduction will leave the operators in the same position they were before the reduction.
So how will this benefit the end users at large as claimed by the MCA?
Or am I missing something?

you are missing the fact that now the operator is able to charge you the client, less per call. say a call before cost 12c, of which 5.51 was this termination charge, now with a 32% decrease, you call can be one cent cheaper per minute.
if you dont call alot, this will not effect you....

Prosit to the MCA.
Any change of telling Government to reduce the W&E bills as the cost of oil has been going down and still the bills kept going up.

Le Charles he saw One Tv, can these people get it into thier heads that oil goes slighly down in summer due to less heating in Europe and Usa but this drop is not that big due to the large amount of fuel used by vehicle travel, especialy in August. Can these people realise that oil production of sweet crude is practically down to zero? due to the L;ibyan crisis.let's hope to god Libya comes online before the onset of winter.
