The government yesterday extended the consultation period for the reorganisation of open markets, following several expressions of interest in the reform.

Consultation will now end on October 17.

The government is trying to better regulate and organise the islands’ 14 open markets through a White Paper that proposes handing over their administration to local councils. It considers the ways in which open markets affect residents and how to minimise the negative effects.

The General Workers’ Union and Għaqda Imprendituri Maltin have set up a joint action committee to safeguard existing market vendors’ interests.
