Lost fisherman located
An AFM aircraft this afternoon guided a fisherman to Malta after he lost his bearings when out of sight of Malta.
Despite the distance, the fisherman, who left from Birzebbuga, managed to use a mobile phone to call for help.
An AFM maritime patrol aircraft quickly located the boat and directed it to Malta.

Thankfully he was brought back to safety but this brings up the question of whether fishermen are well equipped to avoid certain emergencies. In this day and age GPS do help as satelitte phones. Whilst this technology might be seemingly expensive it can save lives and avoid using scarce resources uncessarily.

You'd be surprised how far the mobile network extends into the coastal waters.

Why did he get lost ? Did he have a GPS? ... or at least a compass ? .... if not I guess this could be taken to constitute sheer irresponsibility and the indivual made to pay the expenses involved ... sic

GPS is the least of equipment. What about VHF / EPIRB (Satellite Beacon), just to name two very important safety requirements? But, yes, they cost money and as such they are "extra".
