A prisoner today filed a constitutional application claiming breach of human rights and requesting an effective and immediate remedy.

George Pace, 60, known as il-berqa, had been convicted by a jury in 2009 of being an accomplice in a 1989 murder at l-Ahrax tal-Mellieha.

He was jailed for 30 years and the judgement was confirmed by the Court of Appeal last May.

Mr Pace filed his application against the Attorney General and the Police Commissioner claiming that the evidence produced consisted mainly of three statements taken in September 2004.

During and before the taking of these statements he had not been assisted by a lawyer.

This, he said, was a breach of his fundamental human rights since he had not been given a fair trial.

Defence lawyer Franco Debono signed the application.
