The Paola Council said this morning it agreed that Gaddafi Gardens should be renamed and discussed the matter more than a month ago.

Once a decision is taken and a new name is chosen, it said, its decision would be communicated.

The council issued a statement this morning after it was announced that Lands Parliamentary Secretary Jason Azzopardi is proposing that Gaddafi Gardens in Paola are renamed Libya Gardens.

In a letter to the Paola council in his capacity as a Member of Parliament on the fourth district, Dr Azzopardi said that in view of developments in Libya and as a sign of respect and solidarity with Libyans, with whom Malta had always had close relations, he proposed the immediate renaming of the gardens.

Dr Azzopardi said he was confident the council would accept his proposal.
